Before becoming an astronaut, Neil A. Armstrong was an aeronautical research pilot at the center that is now named in his honor, NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center in Edwards, California. Armstrong participated in both piloting and engineering aspects of numerous projects, including the X hypersonic rocket plane.
